First formed in 1992. Consisting of George VanDoorn (vocals), Scott Williams
(guitar), Steve Forster (guitar) and Scott Rowland (drums). We called
the band 'Necromancy'. Considering our talent level was quite low at this
point, we still wrote typical death metal songs with titles such as 'Void'
and 'Holocaust'. We played every morning in the high school band room
and on most weekends wherever we could. We did some primitive recordings
along the way and played our first real gig in front of 800 people at
the local 'battle of the bands' at the Astradome, Traralgon. It wasnt
very impressive, but the crowd were drunk so who cares!
By the start of 1994, Forster and Rowland had left the band. Me and George
were getting right into the black metal throughout 1993 and wanted to
change the direction of the band away from death metal. George also had
picked up bass duties in this time. On our radio program (The Black Arts
[94-present]) we put out the call for a drummer. We got a reply from a
young guy named Ben van Poppel from Glengarry. To our surprise he was
totally, and legally, blind. But he could play up a storm on that shitty
old drumkit, so he was in.
We rehearsed old stuff and wrote a few new ones until we home recorded
our first demo under the name 'Midgard'. Extremely primitive stuff. We
sold that around town and kept on rehearsing and writing. By this time
we had a few decent songs, 'Shadows of the Forest', 'Conquering the Heavens'.
And by now we had changed our name again to 'Utgard-Loki' and then finally
to 'Vahrzaw'. As well as changing our personal names to Haborym, Rakshasas
and Surtr. So we set about doing our 2nd demo, yet again another home
recording. This was the 'Shadows...' demo. We sent this off to people
and got distributed by "Dark Oceans Productions" in Hallam.
They had “Anatomy” and “Abramelin” on their label
[at certain points]. We attempted another demo later that year (1995),
but it didnt work out. We played another battle at the Gashouse as well,
in full nails and black face paint.
In 1995 we had become a solid outfit with shit equipment. I wrote a few
great songs at the beginning of the year and we were asked by Dark Oceans
to record a song for an upcoming compilation album. We set about recording
'Namiros' at Wombat Road. A very country studio, but we got a decent recording
done. Then the compilation folded (due to Dark Oceans being shit), so
we were left with an unheard song. We rehearsed ourselves to death every
weekend for the rest of the year.
1996 rolled about. We were all set for our demo recording, we had plenty
of decent songs and also dabbled in Mayhem, Deicide, and Obituary covers
along the way. Upon entering Wombat Road again, we recorded Bass, Drums
and Guitar all live. Then Guitar 2 and vocals. We recorded and mixed 6
tracks in 7 hours. We had professionally printed covers and sold them
through zines and friends, even getting overseas buyers. We were quietly
pleased with the quick-fire results. We played a few killer gigs this
year, one being another battle, with a slayer cover to wrap it up, and
one being 'KAOS 96' at the now burnt down Karma hall. Sound was awful,
but we played well.
Through 1997 we still played and our writing and playing was becoming
much more technical. But we slacked off on the rehearsing, and other commitments
and ideas forced us to disband around the end of the year.
Time flew from there, Scott played in cover bands and hardcore (old school)
bands and did a few jam projects here and there. George and Ben had projects
on the go too. And in this time, Scott moved to Melbourne and basically
stopped playing.
Limbo until 2005, when the band got in contact again and decided to re-form and write music for an e.p release. Now with better equipment (courtesy of Jackson, Ibanez and Premier) and far superior musical know-how, new material was written through correspondence and when Scott finally made the trip back to the Latrobe valley to play, all the old dynamics were there and it was back to business. So after a few blitzkrieg rehearsals, they set about recording the “Futile” E.P., this time in Spectrum Studios over 3 days. Their latest material still shows vestiges of their death metal beginnings 14 years ago, but they have always had their own style, and its progressed into something highly original. A split MCD with "The Murphy Boys" is set for release soon entitled "HUBRIS". VAHRZAW are now in the early stages of planning and writing a full-length album set for release in 2007.
